ESSPIN (Education Sector Support Programme In Nigeria)

The Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN) is one of DFID’s major international projects and is aimed at reforming the entire basic education system in Nigeria, one of Africa’s most important and populous countries.

As one of the consortium partners for ESSPIN, which is led by Cambridge Education, DHA provides technical expertise for communications at programme, federal and state level.

Over the past 18 months, our consultants have delivered an intensive capacity building programme designed to equip the in-country communications officers and their government partners to effectively manage communications about education within their local environment. We’ve helped establish cross government communications committees, bringing policy and media experts together so that key messages about education reform are articulated and effectively articulated to the key audiences. We’ve also helped shape a programme wide communications strategy to ensure that information management supports all the strands of the programme, and that a range of media campaigns are effective in engaging the public and civil society in the education reform process. We’ve also provided input to shape the programme’s first Community Survey, which in early 2010 is assessing the impact of education reform on broader civil society so far.

Our consultants have travelled regularly to the different states within Nigeria to provide these inputs holding workshops, providing advice and expertise, developing materials and shaping campaigns to communicate the key elements and benefits of education reform to a wide variety of stakeholder including ministers and officials at Federal and State levels, teachers, parents, civil society groups and children.

The communications teams in Nigeria are now well established and operating effectively within the programme to provide day to day effective communications to support education reform.
