Grandparents Plus
Grandparents Plus is a national charity which champions the vital role of grandparents and the extended family in children’s lives - especially where they take on the caring role in difficult family circumstances.
They support grandparents and the wider family by campaigning for change, providing evidence, policy solutions and training and building alliances and networks, including with grandparents themselves, so that they can have a voice.
DHA was brought in to help Grandparents Plus launch its report: The Poor Relation? Grandparental care: where older people's poverty and child poverty meet. DHA coined the phrase 'Gran-carer' to describe the 'invisible' generation of grandparents who are balancing part time work with caring for their grandchildren - and also often their own elderly parents.
Media pick-up was considerable, with the report featuring on BBC Breakfast news, ITV lunchtime news, BBC Rado 2, 4 and 5 news bulletins and a raft of local radio discussion shows. There were also features on the BBC website, Guardian society web blog and the Telegraph.
