Museums, Libraries & Archives Council

Museum Libraries & Archives (MLA) North West is the regional strategic agency for museums, libraries and archives in the region, working to improve people’s lives by building knowledge, supporting learning, inspiring creativity and celebrating identity. DHA supported the MLA in promoting a project to showcase treasures from the North West in London at a parliamentary reception.

The collection was brought together to celebrate the rich culture and history of the North and show how it is being preserved for future generations with funding from DCMS’s Renaissance in the Regions programme.

The nine Northern treasures included: a copy of a 1207 letters patent from King John to Liverpool that enabled the city to grow; an 1807 letter from William Wilberforce to William Roscoe in Liverpool discussing how the abolition of slavery act could be implemented; the football which Sir Geoff Hurst used to score his legendary hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final; and a highly ornate replica Peacock binding from Liverpool – the most valuable item that sank with the Titanic.

DHA became involved in the project in its final stages and with very limited media lead-in time. We secured impressive regional media coverage and ensured that MPs who attended the event were given the opportunity to follow up the story with media in their constituency.
