Research and campaigning for artists and exhibition practice
In 2013 a-n (The Artists Information Company) and AIR (Artists Interaction and Representation) commissioned DHA to undertake Paying Artists, a research study looking specifically at artists’ experiences of exhibiting in publicly-funded galleries.
The aim was to understand the range of different experiences and practice for artists exhibiting in publicly funded galleries, to identify good and poor practice, and to consider what kind of recommendations might be made for sharing and spreading good practice more widely.
We designed an online survey that reached over 1000 artists who gave their personal experiences of exhibition practice. We also conducted interviews and developed case studies from both artists and galleries.
In 2014 we'll continue our work with a-n and AIR to develop empowering advocacy materials that will be the basis of proposals for improved renumeration for artists.
